Xicani@, volunteer member of the UN 2030 Agenda

“A universal, transformative and integrated agenda that heralds a historic milestone for our world.” Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations (2006-2016)

In recent days, Xicani®, had the honor of receiving the button that accredits him as: Voluntary Member of the 2030 Agenda, of the United Nations, (UN).

On September 25, 2015, more than 150 world leaders attended the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development in New York in order to adopt the Agenda for Sustainable Development. The final document, entitled “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, was adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations. This document includes the 17 Sustainable Development Goals whose objective is to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change without leaving anyone behind by 2030.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are inheritors of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and seek to expand the successes achieved with them, as well as achieve those goals that were not achieved.

These new goals present the uniqueness of urging all countries, whether rich, poor or middle-income, to take action to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that efforts to end poverty must go hand in hand with strategies that promote economic growth and address a range of social needs, including education, health, social protection and employment opportunities, as well as while they fight against climate change and promote the protection of the environment.

Despite the fact that the SDGs are not legally binding, governments are expected to adopt them as their own and establish national frameworks for their achievement. Countries have the primary responsibility for monitoring and reviewing progress in meeting the goals, for which it is necessary to collect reliable, accessible and timely data. Regional monitoring and review activities will build on analyzes carried out at the national level and will contribute to global monitoring and review.

This new development framework provides an opportunity for the United Nations System, worldwide and in Mexico, to focus our cooperation and programming, to continue advocating and promoting the issue of inclusion and equity in a framework of rights, to build more citizenship for Mexicans in this country
